Healthy food. Dignified work. A membership that respects how people actually live.
Avilian Meals was founded by Rodney Manyakaidze. The idea took shape in mid-2023 in Cape Town after research into everyday eating habits, the cost of nutritious food, and the lack of steady, skilled work for many women and young people.
From the beginning the model was dual-purpose: put balanced, carefully prepared meals within reach of professionals and teams at a price that sits below the poverty datum line for many households, and at the same time create employment for single mothers, widows and young people who wanted to cook for a living.
Early production was organised so that trained cooks could prepare meals from home and through a small community network. The first distribution hub in Bulawayo partnered with the Standard Hotel in the CBD so members could collect without friction.
No one should waste a lunch hour deciding what to eat — or default to whatever is fastest and least nourishing. A membership that matches the week removes the daily decision and makes the healthy option the default.
At the same time, food businesses can and should create real livelihoods. Avilian treats kitchen work as skilled, respected employment, not casual labour.
Before Avilian, the same founder’s circle had already been active in community support work through Kurera — a trust focused on nurturing underprivileged children with food, education materials, hygiene support and presence. That earlier work (documented in the local press) shaped the conviction that small, consistent, locally rooted efforts can change daily reality for families.
Avilian Meals is the commercial expression of the same instinct: feed people well, and give others the chance to earn a living doing it.
Avilian Meals is part of the wider CHIKARA ecosystem and is backed by Cognitive Futures Digital Libraries — the research and education startup behind CHIKARA AI. The membership product and the progressive web app are being refined in the open so that what members experience in the kitchen and on their phones stays honest, useful and rooted in Zimbabwean conditions.
